A series of demonstration, practice, extension and testing activities on grouping and classifying natural and man-made materials. Words included absorbency, characteristics, metamorphic, igneous, sedimentary.

Absorbency 1 A powerpoint presentation explaining the meaning of the word and how it can be used to classify materials.	Build a House Click on the house in the middle bottom section of the screen. Learners have to build a model house choosing which types of material they would use for each part. Their decisions are evaluated online.	Characteristic of Materials An animation involving a number of tasks concerning specific properties of the materials given. Finally, there is a 10 question quiz.	Bungee An excellent activity. As the title suggests the activity is based on bungee jumping. The aim is to get the person as near to the ground as possible.
Absorbency 2 From the drop-down list on the right hand side. A short video clip explains the uses of absorbency in nappies and the use of polymers. A simple classroom experiment is shown.	Building Bonanza An excellent interactive game with information. Learners decisions about shape, materials and direction. As each decision is made two cartoon characters assess your choice.	Group/Changing Material An animation involving a number of tasks concerning specific properties of the materials given. Finally, there is a 10 question quiz.	Characteristic Quiz A 10 question interactive quiz marked online.
Ceramics From the drop-down list on the right hand side. A short video clip explains the properties of ceramics and how these are made. A simple classroom experiment is shown.	Find Earth Materials A street scene where learners have to identify 8 materials from the earth.	Materials Quiz Learners have to decide which material each of the items in the picture is made of. This leads to a more questions and information.	Grouping & Classifying Test A test of 15 questions marked online covering how materials can be organised into different groups and the uses of specific materials.
Characteristic of Materials A series of screens covering all aspects of this part of the curriculum.	Glass Re-cycling game Learners have to sort out the rubbish collected by placing into the correct bins.	Rocks and Soils An animation involving a number of tasks concerning specific properties of the materials given. Finally, there is a 10 question quiz. The Mixtures Lab An excellent activity for more able learners who have to separate materials by selecting the correct separation mechanism and the physical properties that allow separation.	On the resource trail Learners have to answer a number of questions about various 'materials' to complete the course.
Igneous Rocks A simple animation showing how this type of rock material is formed.	Loop the Loop An episode from Digger and the Gang involving separating materials.		Properties Wordsearch A wordsearch in which all the hidden words are properties of materials.
Material Matters A series of links to associated pictures, information and a quiz question on a range of materials.	Separating Materials An excellent animation followed by a series of activities which test a learner's understanding.		Separating Materials Test A 9 question quiz marked online.
Materials A site which compares the properties and applications of wood, plastic, aluminium, brick, concrete, cast iron and steel. Each can be squeezed and stretched.	Where is wood? An excellent 'drag and drop' activity identifying items that originally come from wood. By clicking on the item the processes are then shown.

Metamorphic Rocks A simple animation showing how this type of rock material is formed.
