A series of demonstration, practice, extension and testing
activities on the forces of pushing, pulling, sinking and
floating. Also included buoyancy, surface tension, lift, thrust
and viscosity. |

All About Forces Module An excellent explanation of how gravity, friction, compression, stretching and magnetism are all forces. Learners have to complete a series of tasks as they understand the science. |
Floating and Sinking A series of activities on floating and sinking which could also be used as a demonstration tool. |
Acceleration Learners perform a series of experiments and fill in a chart with the results to understand how mass, force and acceleration are related. |
3 Puck
Chuck Dubious link but good fun and very skilful. |
Buoyancy Explorer An excellent activity for demonstration or inquiry. A series of materials can be placed into tanks of various liquids. There are some interesting results. |
Identifying Forces Part 1 learners identify the pull, push, and twist forces used. Part 2 learners have a 'drag and drop' activity sorting push and pull toys. |
Forces Animated diagrams with text explain a number of forces in more depth. |
Bungee An excellent activity which could also be used as a demonstration of tension and tensile strength. As the title suggests the activity is based on bungee jumping. The aim is to get the person as near to the ground as possible. |
Changing Shape
by force Learners have to identify the force being used in a series of situations. |
Push and Pull 1 Activity 3 gives a set of toys which you have to classify into pushing or pulling objects. |
Forces and Motion Information about forces and motion followed by an 11 question quiz marked online about the information given. |
Design a Trebuchet An activity involving force, angles and weight applied to the trebuchet. Your task is to destroy a number of buildings by altering angle and load applied. This is not as easy as it may seem. |
Changing the Shape 1 A simple activity identifying whether the items will stay or return to the shape the were after force is applied. |
Toy Maker An activity comparing the different types of wheels on different forms of transport. |
Forces Questions A simple true or false set of questions about forces. |
Changing the Shape 2 Does it matter how much force is applied and for how long? |
Noah's Ark An excellent activity which could also be used as a demonstration tool. As the title suggests the task is to put the animals into the ark. However, to balance them you first have to weigh them and the balance point on the scales is not always in the middle. |
Changing the Shape 3 Making predictions on pushing, pulling, bending and stretching. |
Changing the Shape 4 Checking an understanding of the forces involved. |
Different
types of forces An excellent series of animated diagrams explaining each of the different types and forces with a real life example. |
Floating and Sinking A series of activities on floating and sinking which could also be used as a demonstration tool. |
Learn About Flight Using an animated paper airplane model the forces of lift, thrust, gravity and drag are explained. |
Learn About Forces A series of activities in Jack's Room, Sofia's Room and The Park. Put forces into a child's perspective, needs support. |
Propulsion An excellent animated site which explains a number of aspects of propulsion in simple and easy to understand steps. It covers propellers, sails, hot air and jet propulsion. As it is a simple video clip it can be repeated a number of times. |
Push and Pull 1 Activity 1 is a simple animation showing pushing and pulling. Activity 2 encourages learners to think about other examples and Activity 3 gives a set of toys which you have to classify into pushing or pulling objects. |
Push and Pull 2 Part 1 checks a learner's understanding of pushing. Part 2 checks a learner's understanding the effects of pushing hard and harder. Part 3 checks a learner's understanding of which household items push or pull. |
Push and Pull 3 A screen and interactive keyboard asks the learner to type in something they know about pushing and/or pulling. |
Viscocity Explorer An excellent activity for demonstration or inquiry. A series of liquids can be heated to various temperatures and steel ball bearings then drop into them to show the viscosity of the liquids at varying temperatures. |
