A series of demonstration, practice, extension and testing activities on shape including shape recognition, matching, 3D shapes, 2D shapes, shape puzzles, symmetry, area, volume, polygons, patterns, sorting and solving spatial problems.

Demonstration Activities

2D Shape | Powerpoint An excellent presentation which covers all the major shapes considering number of sides, angles and lines of symmetry.

2D Shape Recognition | Slides A series of slides for demonstration and testing. Learners are given a description of a shape for them to identify. The answer is then given in diagram form with the name.

3D Shape Mobile An incredible resource which shows a number of rotating objects which can be coloured or made opaque.

3D Shapes and Symmetry A series of drawings of shapes showing their lines of symmetry.

Compare solid shapes | Animation A short animation to explain the concept of counting sides, edges, vertical faces to compare solid shapes.

Faces | Vertices | Edges 1 | Animation An excellent resource. 7 short animations showing 3D shapes created from their net diagrams. Triangular Pyramid, Cube, Pentagonal Prism, Octagonal Prism, Square Pyramid, Hexagonal Pyramid and Connected Pyramids are included. Learners can complete a grid counting faces, vertices and edges of each shape.

Tetrahedron, Cube, Octahedron, Dodecahedron and Icosahedron are included. Learners can complete a grid counting faces, vertices, edges types of face shape and number of faces meeting at each Vertex of each shape.

Rotating Shape 1 An intricate and complex shape with which you can demonstrate many things. One of those sites with lots of uses or none depending how you perceive it.

Rotating Shape 2 A series of animated shapes which can be coloured and rotated.

Shape Facts and Lines of Symmetry An excellent resource showing the lines of symmetry in 10 different shapes. Learners click on a shape and then the 'Fold' button.

Shape Names | Click On As learners click on the shapes the written word appears.

Shapes can be 2D or 3D | Click On An activity on 2D and 3D shapes. Move the mouse over all of the shapes to see their properties and their names. Click on the 3D shapes to see their properties. You can animate them so you begin to understand what they look like.

Tangram A simple square made up of coloured shapes which can be dismantled and rotated to form any number of shapes.

Tessellations A 32 slide explanation of what tessellations are and their history.

The Shape Show | Video A 15 minute video starting with 2D shapes and taking that into real life 3D shapes in real life. An excellent resource. Needs looking at before use.

Translation | Click On Click on the 'Translation' tab to find two examples of this concept.

Triangle colour match A demonstration of how a 3 coloured triangle can be rotated. Followed by an activity in which learners have to match coloured triangles.

Triangles | Animation An animation showing the differences between equilateral, isosceles and scalene triangles. Next, a Venn diagram to sort the isosceles from the right angled triangles. The final activity is where you have to sort the scalene from the right angled triangles.

Types of Triangles Pictorial explanations of a variety of different types of triangles. Right angle, equilateral, isosceles, acute and obtuse.

Virtual Dice An activity which combines shape with probability. The dice are 6, 8, 10 and 12 sided and can be spun to reveal the numbers written on each face. There is an option to change these numbers.

Virtual Tangram A resource to explain what tangrams are and how the shapes can be manipulated to form new designs.

2D Shape Match Learners have to match the correct name to the definition. Words describe from 3-10 sided shapes.

Bob's Pipe Game An activity connecting pipes in the correct order to fit the 'shadow' pipes.

Bob's Tool Shed | Drag and Drop An activity where learners match the tool to the 'shadow' shape.

Build Your Fire Engine | Drag and Drop An activity in which parts are placed over the shadow outline shape.

Building Blocks | Shapes | Drag and Drop An excellent activity where learners drop part shapes into a 'shadow' shape in the centre of the screen.

Butterfly Wings | Patterns | Drag and Drop Match the wings that are the same and watch the butterfly fly away.

Buzzing with shapes An activity of matching a number with a shape with that number of sides.

Calamity's Quest Listen to each question and click on the right shape door. Captain Calamity moves to another room in the castle every time you get a question right. You can track his progress by clicking on the map.

Car Race | Sequencing | Drag and Drop A car race takes place and learners have to place the cars into the order they finished. Simple but effective.

Colours + Shapes | Keyboard As learners press keys on the keyboard the colours and shapes change.

Count the Cubes | Shapes | Click On An excellent activity where learners count the numbers of cubes in the shapes and input them.

Crater Pairs | Click On A game of memory shapes. Clicking on the craters which have the same shapes.

Crazy Pattern Machine This game helps learners to recognize repeating patterns by using shapes, letters and numbers.

Creating Patterns One of those sites limited only by our imagination. Learners input shapes into a grid which can then be flipped, turned and reversed to create unlimited patterns.

Dragon Tales A shape matching activity where learners have to match 3 shapes with items of that shape within a line drawing picture.

Mushroom Match A matching activity where learners have to match 4 mushrooms with their shapes.

Sort the 2D Shapes 1 | Drag and Drop An activity of sorting the rectangles from the non-rectangles. Learners drop the shapes into the correct square.

Sort the 2D Shapes 2 | Drag and Drop An activity of sorting the shapes into those with all right angles, those with right angles and those with no right angles. Learners drop the shapes into the correct square.

Sorting Triangles | Venn Diagram | Drag and Drop An activity dropping shapes into the appropriate section of the Venn Diagram.

Space Station Robots Derby has to build robots from a series of shapes so she can return to Earth.

Spots on the giraffe | Drag and Drop An activity in which learners have to place a series of shapes on to the corresponding spots on the giraffe to complete the pattern.

Stacking Up | Matching Shapes | Click On An excellent activity. Learners match the same shapes on the same coloured tiles. These stack up layer upon layer.

Triangle Alley | Shapes | Drag and Drop Learners have to drop the shapes at the top of the screen to fill the rectangle below.

Extension Activities

3D Boxes An activity calculating the cubes needed to make the different 3D shapes shown.

Bathroom Tiles Levels 1,2,3 An activity on 3 levels of rotation, reflection and translation of patterns.

Pipedown An excellent 3D game of linking pipes for a ball to fall through.

Point out the View An activity developing skills of 'looking at things from another persons viewpoint'. I have not found any other site which develops this type of spatial awareness.

Post the Shapes An excellent activity which involves rotating, reflecting and translating shapes so they drop down their holes in the least number of translations.
