General Skills Activities

Learners input start numbers and formulas and check their calculations. A basic demonstration of how spreadsheets can be used.

Boolify makes it easy to understand how web searching works with a simple drag and drop facility to demonstrate.
Build a free website
A site which shows learners how to build a free website. Used in conjunction with 'How to create a website in 5 days' would provide more able learners the basics of web page creation.
Charlie Chimps Game
A very basic activity to help learners understand the concept of modelling and changing variables, although the single activity could also be used as a problem solving activity.
Coffee Simulation
A simple simulation showing how to input a number of variables when making a cup of coffee.
Computer 1
A 'drag and drop' activity in which learners have to label computer equipment.
Computer 2
A 'drag and drop' activity in which learners learn about various computer equipment.
Computers Brain Pop
An excellent animation explaining in detail how a computer works and what each part does. Learners won't get all the information in one go but it's short enough to play a number of times.

A beginners guide to using the mouse and keyboard. An excellent simple to follow set of instructions for those just beginning with computers or those who may have a fear of using them. The site has spoken instructions and the facility of subtitles.

An excellent animation explaining what a virus is, how they are transmitted and how to avoid them.
Computer Words
Learners have to find the computer objects to match the word list given. An excellent activity to give learners the correct vocabulary.
Copying and Pasting
Building on previous knowledge learners have to 'copy and paste' a number of sentences and 'submit them' for marking.

An incredible site for those wishing to create their own websites. This online tutorial is simple to follow with video clips and tasks to complete.

Clownfish Chase
A question and answer activity in which wrong answers lead to being attacked by a shark associated by the 'Jaws' music. This may encourage learners not to get the answer correct!!

A site for the more able learner or perhaps as extension activities or project work.

An activity in which learners are presented with a series of words which they have to copy using the keyboard. Simple but effective activity.

An excellent short tutorial explaining what an URL is, the various parts of a web address and how this links to the internet.
Exploring the Internet
A very detailed explanation of how to use your computer to surf, store, search, sort and save. The fact that all the information is in written and image format may restrict its use.

An excellent interactive site which explains why computer data needs to be compressed and how this can be achieved. Learners are asked to make decisions throughout the animation.

An excellent site showing learners how to stay safe when using the internet, emails and mobile phones. Some excellent examples to create discussions.

Juicy Drinks Machine
An activity in which learners have to click on the ends of wires and connect them to the control box in a series of on/off control devices to create the prefect drink. I found this a difficult activity.

Keepass is a safer alternative to writing down passwords because they are all kept scrambled with a master password.

Sorting Prisoners
An excellent activity showing the use of sensors and readings. By moving hand-held electricity, smell and heat sensors over the four prisoners and recording the readings learners have to then decide which cell each of the prisoners is from.
