General Skills Activities

Alien Spreadsheet Learners input start numbers and formulas and check their calculations. A basic demonstration of how spreadsheets can be used.

Attaching a message | Tutorial An excellent short tutorial showing how to attach picture, text or sound file to an email. Learners have to perform this task on screen.

Avira Antivir Personal 8 This free security software protects a computer from viruses and other online threats, such as worms and Trojans.

Boolify Boolify makes it easy to understand how web searching works with a simple drag and drop facility to demonstrate.

Build a free website A site which shows learners how to build a free website. Used in conjunction with 'How to create a website in 5 days' would provide more able learners the basics of web page creation.

Charlie Chimps Game A very basic activity to help learners understand the concept of modelling and changing variables, although the single activity could also be used as a problem solving activity.

Coffee Simulation A simple simulation showing how to input a number of variables when making a cup of coffee.

Computer 1 | Drag and Drop An activity in which learners have to label computer equipment.

Computer 2 | Drag and Drop An activity in which learners learn about various computer equipment.

Computer Tutor A beginners guide to using the mouse and keyboard. An excellent simple to follow set of instructions for those just beginning with computers or those who may have a fear of using them. The site has spoken instructions and the facility of subtitles.

Computer Viruses | Animation An excellent animation explaining what a virus is, how they are transmitted and how to avoid them.

Computer Words Learners have to find the computer objects to match the word list given. An excellent activity to give learners the correct vocabulary.

Copying and Pasting Building on previous knowledge learners have to 'copy and paste' a number of sentences and 'submit them' for marking.

Create website in 5 days | Website Design An incredible site for those wishing to create their own websites. This online tutorial is simple to follow with video clips and tasks to complete.

Creating documents | Hangman A hangman game featuring words associated with creating documents.

Creating documents | Wordsearch A wordsearch featuring words associated with creating documents.

Clownfish Chase A question and answer activity in which wrong answers lead to being attacked by a shark associated by the 'Jaws' music. This may encourage learners not to get the answer correct!!

Computer Safety | Drag and Drop Learners drag and drop the writing to the pictures to make the match.

Computers | Word Cloze Learners drop the correct words to complete the sentences.

Computers | Hangman Learners have to work out the hidden word by guessing possible letters included.

Dance Mat Typing If you want to learn to type this has to be the site. Split into 4 sections with training and exercises built in.

Easy Keysi An activity in which learners are presented with a series of words which they have to copy using the keyboard. Simple but effective activity.

Entering an URL | Tutorial An excellent short tutorial explaining what an URL is, the various parts of a web address and how this links to the internet.

Exploring the Internet | Explanation A very detailed explanation of how to use your computer to surf, store, search, sort and save. The fact that all the information is in written and image format may restrict its use.

FireFox 3 An alternative browser for those wishing for a change to Internet Explorer.

Honey, I Shrunk the Data | Interactive Animation An excellent interactive site which explains why computer data needs to be compressed and how this can be achieved. Learners are asked to make decisions throughout the animation.

How computers work An index of links to sites which explain the workings of the computer.

How to keep safe An excellent site showing learners how to stay safe when using the internet, emails and mobile phones. Excellent examples to create discussions.

HTML Examples A site which provides some basic examples of HTML coding for those wishing to create their own web designs.

ICT | Tutorials If you have ever wanted to be able to use Microsoft Word, Publisher, Powerpoint, Excel or simply use the internet then this index of tutorials is a must. Excellent as an ICT skills base.

Juicy Drinks Machine An activity in which learners have to click on the ends of wires and connect them to the control box in a series of on/off control devices to create the prefect drink. I found this a difficult activity.

Keepass Keepass is a safer alternative to writing down passwords because they are all kept scrambled with a master password.

Learning HTML A series of exercises to assist learners in acquiring the basic skills of writing HTML code.

Learn to type online A series of exercises to assist learners in acquiring basic typing skills.

Microsoft | Tutorials A series of excellent tutorials covering Word, Publisher, Powerpoint, Excel and other creative ICT tools.

Modelling & Numeric Data 15 questions to answer correctly or the 'teacher gets it'.

Outlook Express A series of activities to assist learners understand how to 'send and receive emails', 'add to the address book' and 'organise emails'.

Pick the Apples A very basic activity to help learners to click the mouse.

Sack Race A very basic activity to help learners with the positions of keys on the keyboard.

Sandwich Making | Spreadsheet An activity at 3 levels in which learners have to make sandwiches to a specified calorific value and containing specific numbers of items. This information is entered into a spreadsheet grid.

Sid's Online Safety (SOS) An interactive site which poses a number of questions for learners to consider with regard to safety on the internet. It starts by comparing internet safety with road safety and the obvious do's and don'ts.

Sorting Games Nine different interactive sorting activities based around a branching database.

Sorting Prisoners | Reading Information An excellent activity showing the use of sensors and readings. By moving hand-held electricity, smell and heat sensors over the four prisoners and recording the readings learners have to then decide which cell each of the prisoners is from.
